Upgrading to NOWS from NWSB 6.5

There is NO simple "UPGRADE" for NWSB6.5 to NOWS-SBE2 so that leave a door open to MS. Unlike MOST Linux systems - Novell has chosen NOT to do a "HOWTO" nor do they offer a VM to "Play" with - pity

there are various things you can do to get your GW6.5 to NOWS-SBE2 in theory getting your system up to GW7 on NWSB6.5 would be a good start then just copy the GW data and GRAFT - for 10 users this might be relatively painless

You should MS gives you lots of tools to move from GW to Exchange on MS SBS platform - Novell does NOT seem to (If you use GW document Management - you may be stuck with GW or abandon DM)

You could move to MS Server platform and continue to run GW on Windows since all agents will install on MS Windows Server. Again this is relatively painless for 10 users - you simply install on Windows and copy the GW data across & graft (assuming you upgrade to GW7 first)

Backup software is very poor - Amanda supplied with NOWS-SBE is crap for want of a better word. There aren't that many decent / easy to use Backup applications on Linux. On the MS platform, Microsoft's Built-in Backup is VERY useable (its a stripped down BackupExec) and there are dozens of good backup software applications like BackupExec, ArcServe, Backup Assist, Nova Backup etc. There is NO equivalent of BackupExec or ArcServer (you many be able to by ArcServer for Linux but its END OF LIFE)

I managed to get everything including iFolder running ONCE ... but unable to repeat it after DOZENS of installs on at least half a dozen systems (new and OLD hardware) !!!

Frankly, this kind of "Reliability" is NOT appreciated and I would even dream in my worst nightmares of tryng to roll out NOWS-SBE to clients unless I already had my ticket to leave the country afterwards!

NOWS v MS SBS

The Novell Open Workgroup Suite, Small Business Edition was in the pipeline just before the infamous 'deal' that Novell Made with Microsoft. I guess the problem was that it was too low priced to make it viable to pay Microsoft for every SBS they lost to NOWS and they knew if they put the price up they wouldn't get any takers.

I think the Microsoft probably made it part of the deal that Novell either pay up for every copy of NOWS sold, OR they just take it off the market. Novell felt it was too late to do that, so they just made the product difficult to install, by and large unusable and full of bugs with no documentation and no support.

Novell Open Workgroup Suite - SBE

Believe me, you really don't want to go down this route. This makes Vista and Windows ME look like champions. It must be the worst product I have ever come across. Pure rubbish

We tried to install this and get it working at least a dozen times and the end result was always the same - a complete disaster.

There is no proper documentation and no support at all. At least the Novell 6.5 Small Business Edition actually WORKED and not only did it have GroupWise it aslso had ZenWorks as well. Granted it wasn't the greatest product on the market, but it was easy to install, easy to support and useable from the customer point of view. Novell Open Workgroup Suite - Small Business Edition is a joke. It's VERY difficult to get it installed. If you make the mistake of trying to patch it, you will trash everything. If you think there's any help out there FORGET IT.
